Dancing with death provides an interesting perspective on life...
Genre-fluid pop artist, multi-instrumentalist and brain cancer survivor Jaime Jackett is a powerful and evocative performer based in Broome, Western Australia. Jackett’s music delicately treads the contrast between light and dark, deliberately juxtaposing them, and playing with the patterns and shadows they create.
"Life is short. Death isn't at the end of the line, but beside you the whole way."
With a dynamic voice that morphs from glass clear and sweet, to blues-drenched wails, Jackett draws in audiences with her raw delivery, story and grit. Anchored by hooks, her music is influenced by a wide range of genres drawing in pure pop, folk and soul. Her cleverly penned lyrics tell tales of love, tribulations, and connection to the planet and community.
Jackett is best known for her work in Austral-Canadian folk-pop band Belle Miners with whom she has toured internationally. The band recorded their debut record with Juno and Grammy Award winning producer Joby Baker, during which time Jackett was recovering from ‘impossible’ brain surgeries.
Sharing her story to empower others, for 3 years she has run her ‘Song a Day May’ fundraiser - writing a song each day for brain cancer research. 8 of these songs have found their way onto her debut album, ‘Reinvention’ - recorded with Bunbury producer James Newhouse in late 2023 - released Sept 6th, 2024.
"A deep breath opens Jaime Jackett’s new album “Reinvention” and what follows is an explosion of exquisitely decorated songs, every colour, every sound, every instrument perfectly poised to catch Jaime’s incredible voice as she swings from her trapeze and somersaults with precision across every note.
Pop sensibility combined with her mischievous sense of play turns the dark to light as “Reinvention” inspires us to explore vulnerability and struggle like a dance party where human emotion twinkles and the disco ball we call earth spins us around the sun.
Showing us how to make sense of life’s inevitable challenges through the perspective of a brain cancer survivor, Jaime is an artist who has danced with death - and she continues to do so, with disarming joy.
“My naked voice is powerful
For it’s humanity
That’s why I share my story
With you so openly”
I first met Jaime by way of Austral-Canadian folk-pop trio Belle Miners, from the moment they melted their voices and hearts into one another on their Australian tour, I was completely enthralled.
Belle Miners recorded their debut album while Jackett was recovering from brain surgeries, courageously sharing her journey and inviting us into the fragility of life while simultaneously harnessing its power.
On her solo record, Jaime introduces us to her multi-dimensional genius and offers us everything from acoustic guitar, to synths and saxophone - and all of it makes complete sense.
With a dynamic voice that is as delicate as it is fierce, Jackett knows how to build a song from acoustic to anthemic and before I know it, I’m listening to the album again as soon as it’s finished.
“I’ll just go on and reinvent myself againYeah I’ll just go on reinventing myself again”
“Reinvention” is a creative force. The album is uninhabited and brilliantly alive, like the artist herself."
